The Reverend Dr. Javier A. Viera is President and Professor of Education and Leadership at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Prior to joining Garrett in 2021, he served as dean and professor of pastoral theology at Drew University Theological School from 2014-2021. His academic work and interests center on adult learning and development, interreligious dialogue and the learning that takes place across religious and/or ideological difference, and Latin American decolonial epistemologies. Prior to his time in higher education, Dr. Viera’s professional life unfolded in various places such as Capitol Hill in D.C., university campus ministry, congregational pastoral ministry, and the founding and leadership of several non-profit organizations. He is a graduate of Florida Southern College, Duke, Yale, and Columbia universities.
