The Yale Center for Faith & Culture is building a team of research scholars to advance an interdisciplinary project on the Theology of Joy and the Good Life. As a member of this team, the Joy and its Analogs Research Scholar will:
- Direct, under the leadership of Prof. Volf, the Center’s Life Worth Living program, including the “Joy and its Analogs in Other Traditions” sub-project of the Theology of Joy and the Good Life project.
- Author and submit for publication scholarly articles that advance the project research agenda.
- Direct, under the leadership of Prof. Volf, the “Joy and its Analogs” sub-granting competition.
- Edit a volume of essays articulating visions of the good life in various normative traditions resulting from the “Joy and its Analogs” sub-granting competition and contribute an essay articulating the project’s developing vision of the good life in the Christian tradition.
- Frame the intellectual agenda for the “Joy Among the Virtues, Actions, and Emotions” consultations by writing case statements, identifying and recruiting participants, and participating in discussions.
- Occasionally teach Center-supported courses (including the Yale College Life Worth Living seminar).
- Develop a network of researchers beyond Yale who generate a collaborative, inter-tradition research agenda that advances project goals.
- Author and submit for publication popular articles year that communicate project insights to the broader public.
The position is a 3-year faculty appointment at Yale Divinity School under the direction of Miroslav Volf, principal investigator. The Divinity School hopes to make an appointment of a junior scholar with a record of distinguished scholarship and a commitment to theological education. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. Possible fields include (but are not limited to):
- Theology
- Biblical Studies
- Ethics
- Philosophy
- Comparative Religion
Exceptional ABDs will also be considered.
The mission of the Center for Faith & Culture is not just to produce world-class scholarship but also to connect the insights of that scholarship to the real lives of people in churches and the broader culture. The ideal candidate will have experience and passion for “giving ideas legs” and communicating in educational, ecclesial, and popular contexts in ways that generative transformational change.
