Middle school chaplain, Atlanta, GA

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, the largest Episcopal parish day school in the United States, seeks applications for the position of Middle School Chaplain. An independent school serving almost 1,400 students, from 3 year olds through 12th grade, Holy Innocents’ mission is to develop in students a love of learning, a respect for self and others, faith in God, and a sense of service to the world community. HIES respects the spiritual path of each student, provides the opportunity to worship as a community, and promotes the respect of the dignity of all human beings as a core value. Our students experience weekly Chapel services that feature regular worship from the Book of Common Prayer; we also welcome clergy of other denominations and faith traditions to worship with and teach our students. HIES provides additional opportunities for learning about the life of faith through service opportunities and courses in the Religious Studies Department.

Primary Responsibilities of the Middle School Chaplain include:

  • Planning and leading weekly Chapel services
  • Pastoral caregiving for students, their families, our faculty and staff
  • Teaching in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Religion curriculum
  • Collaborating with other faculty, staff, and chaplains
  • Coordinating service learning projects with other chaplains

Preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Master of Divinity degree
  • Ordination in the Episcopal Church preferred but not required
  • Teaching experience in a school setting, preferably with middle school students
  • Experience in ministry or a non-profit setting
  • Pastoral care and liturgical training and experience * Commitment to working with students in a diverse community
  • Ability to work effectively with various school constituencies (including parents, faculty, and staff, the clergy of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church, and diocesan clergy)
  • A collaborative spirit and sense of teamwork
  • Passion for the mission and vision of Episcopal schools
  • A sense of humor
