Santa Clara: Black and African-American theologies

The Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit and Catholic university, invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position to begin Fall 2022 in Black and African American Theologies, either Christian or Islamic, with expertise in the sociohistorical context of North America. We encourage applications from individuals with research and teaching interests that bridge historical contexts with contemporary issues, communities, or ethical concerns, which may include work with the Black Liberation, Womanist, or Muslima theologies. Members of our faculty possess familiarity with the Christian theological tradition, whether as the context for their own work or as a dialogue partner for their work in other traditions and methodologies, and understand and support the University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission.

Candidates should demonstrate potential for excellent teaching, promise of a research program leading to scholarly publication, and capacity for service to the department, College, University, and profession. We are particularly interested in candidates familiar with inclusive pedagogical practices that would advance SCU goals of diversity and equity, and with demonstrated experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduate students.

Minimal qualifications include completion of the doctoral degree by the time of appointment, evidence of potential for effective and excellent university-level teaching primarily at the undergraduate level, and evidence of an agenda for scholarship and promise of peer-reviewed publication. This search is part of a cluster hire in “Race, Inequality, and Social Justice” taking place in seven departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The application deadline is September 20, 2021. For information on the department, visit https://www.scu.edu/religiousstudies; the full posting for this position, with detailed application instructions, is available through https://www.scu.edu/hr/careers/.
